Contemporary handstitched textiles for you and your home.
Lorna specialises in decorative accessories, gifts and bespoke cards. Lorna’s work is handstitched and hand finished using unusual and vintage fabrics often embellished with beads, buttons and embroidery. Wherever possible Lorna prefers to use Scottish lambswool, wool Tartan and Tweed as well as high quality woollen felt. Much of the work is individually commissioned and made to order and can be personalised with names, dates or other messages.
At Chookiebirdie you can always be sure that your purchase is unique and will provide pleasure for years to come.
“I have been a self employed textile designer since I graduated from the Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels with a degree in Printed Textile Design in 1992. For 15 years I worked in printed surface design - and had a successful career specialising in swimwear where my bold Hawaiian style floral prints were especially popular in USA and Japan. I sold to a range of clients including Pringle - Scotland, Jones - New York and Louis Vuitton.
I opened my new Studio and Gallery in the Main Street of West Kilbride, Craft Town, Scotland in late 2007 where I design and hand produce my collection of contemporary home accessories and gifts. I now have a number of clients who commission original pieces from me.
My work is varied but always carefully crafted with clean lines, neat stitching and vibrant colours. I try to recycle as much as possible and find that charity shops hold a wealth of treasures and inspiration - particularly the one across the road from the studio where the lovely ladies are always on the lookout for nice bits and pieces for me!
I keep an eye out for different fabrics particularly when I am travelling. I find that printed fabrics will often inspire the final design - almost suggesting what they want to be made into! Felt is especially versatile. The variety of colours available is perfect for my work and it is easy to design with. I also love using Scottish Tweed and Tartan and find their combination with felt stunning.
Everything I make is individually produced so fabrics and finishes vary constantly. All of my work is a limited edition - sometimes a bespoke one-off! If you cannot find what you are looking for please call me!
The studio has also given me the opportunity and space to work alongside other crafters and designers. I am now able to offer small tutorials and workshops and I really enjoy the interaction that this brings with fellow enthusiasts and crafters. If you are in the area please call in!
