West Kilbride Public Hall is one of the most widely used in North Ayrshire acting as a venue for a wide range of activities. Musical/Dramatic performances, dance classes, youth group activities and private functions are among the events that regularly take place. A committee of dedicated volunteers from the local community manages the Public Hall.
The Green Centre was established in a disused quarry purchased by the community and is managed by the Environmental Group. Boasting an award winning wormery, the centre also has a large greenhouse and composting area. Bedding plants are brought-on here before planting out in the various gardens, troughs and hanging baskets that festoon the town in the spring and summer months; West Kilbride has been a finalist in the ‘Scotland in Bloom” competition on six occasions. Working closely with the local primary school staff and children on environmental projects, the members of the committee were delighted when the children were presented with an award specially commissioned by the competition judges in 2005.
Originally devised as a one-off event, The Scarecrow Festival proved so successful that it is now an annual event. Community groups are involved in the creation of an army of scarecrows that take over the town at the end of July. The festival culminates in a Scarecrow Parade through West Kilbride, a treat for children – of all ages!
